The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday they have suspended running back Brandon Jacobs without pay for the final three games of the regular season.

The suspension comes several days after Jacobs complained via social media about his lack of playing time.

Jacobs plans to file a grievance, with the hope of either being reinstated or receiving his pay or getting released by the 49ers, USA Today reported.

Jacobs has a base salary of $950,000 in 2012, which means he’d lose more than $167,000 if the suspension is upheld.

By suspending Jacobs, the 49ers prevent Jacobs from going to another team in the final weeks of the regular season.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh issued a “no comment” during his Monday press conference when asked to elaborate on Jacobs’ suspension.
Jacobs, who was signed by the 49ers in the offseason, was active for just three games this season, and he had just five rushing attempts for seven yards.

He was not on the active roster for Sunday’s victory over the Miami Dolphins. Rookie LaMichael James, who played in his first game as a pro, and Anthony Dixon were the backups to starting running back Frank Gore.

Last week, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Jacobs expressed his displeasure on Instagram, responding to fans’ complaints that he only posted pictures of himself in a Giants uniform by writing, “I am on this team rotting away so why would I wanna put any pics up of anything that say niners. This is by far the worst year I ever had, I’ll tell you like I told plenty others.”

Jacobs rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2007 and again in 2008 for the Giants, who released Jacobs after he rushed for 571 yards in 2011.
