Columbia University football player Chad Washington has been charged with a hate crime after another student claimed Washington threatened him and also used Asian slurs, according to NBCNewYork.com.

The victim, 19, who is of Asian descent, told police Washington and several friends began heckling two female friends as the trio departed a student dormitory early Sunday. The victim attempted to defend his friends and Washington began calling him names and other slurs and began following him, according to police.

Washington, who was reportedly in a group of at least five individuals, then allegedly pushed the victim against a wall and grabbed his collar, according to police.

While a school security officer saw the incident, he believed it was just horseplay. But when the victim saw Washington again on Tuesday, he notified police, who took Washington into custody and charged him with one misdemeanor count of aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

Washington did not enter a plea during an arraignment on Wednesday, but was released without bail. He must appear in court on the charges on July 8. The university refused comment.

In This Generation Of Softies, I’m Glad I Was Raised Tough

I remember being just 6 years old when tragedy struck. I couldn’t find precious Blankie Pie anywhere. He was gone, probably hidden by The Pillows, or worse, stolen by the Doll-Eating Monster that lived in the shadows of my closet. I had lost my best friend and sleeping companion from when I was born and […]
