Is David Stern Overdoing It With The Spurs Decision?
David Stern came down heavy on the San Antonio Spurs last week for sitting their star players when playing an away game against the defending Champion Miami Heat. The game ended up being close and the Heat squeaked out a win, but David Stern was none pleased.
Stern fined the Spurs organization $250,000 for not having their star players playing when they were injured saying that what the Spurs did was a disservice to the league and its fans. Stern feels the fans in Miami got cheated out of their one chance to see the Spurs play this season.
Were the fans in Miami really cheated though? They saw a very dramatic and compelling game. They watched their stars including their new sixth man come up in the clutch again and they won. To me as Miami Heat fan, that sounds like a great night, even with the Spurs stars not in attendance.
Again this is a commissioner throwing weight around for the sake of it. The move to rest players for the playoff and not let them play has being something the Spur coach Gregg Popovich been doing for at least two years and still has been winning 50+ games a year.
Well at lest we know this fine was the act of a man who probably won’t be able to hand out too many more as Stern is set to retire next season.
