Jon Jones reminded us all that he is in fact human last night when he left UFC 165 on a stretcher. In an epic battle for the light heavyweight title, Jones faced off against one of the most promising foreign exports in MMA, 26-year-old Alexander Gustafsson. And while he walked away with his champion status in tact once again, it didn’t come easy.
The fight was everything we could have asked for, with several back-and-forth exchanges, solid ground game and some rousing head kicks. In the end it was Jones who outlasted his opponent in five rounds, retaining his title for a UFC-record sixth time.
While some people may argue that Gustafsson won the fight, it was the barrage of head kicks and elbows at the end that put Jon over the top. You’re going to have to really put on a show to convince judges to name a new champion and Alexander was unable to do that. However judging by how close it was, many fans and experts are smelling a rematch.
Between Jones’ departure to the hospital in last night’s bout to his previous match against Chael Sonnen where his big toe almost ripped off, it’s safe to say that he’s been paying the cost to win lately. Oh well. Bones still knows.
