Kickoffs may be closer to becoming an extinct, according to a Time Magazine report. In a cover story this week, Time revealed that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Rich McKay, the head of the league’s competition committee discussed a proposal that would eliminate kickoff after a touchdown or field goal.

“It’s an off-the-wall idea, he told Time. It’s different and makes you think differently. It did me.”

The alternative was conceived by Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie head coach Greg Schiano. The team that scored a touchdown or field goal would then get the ball on its own 30-yard line in a fourth and 15 situation.

That team can either go for a first down or punt. If you go for it and miss, the opponent would take over with good field position, which essentially replaces a failed onside kick.

Kickoffs were moved up five yards last season, while coverage teams were required to start within five yards of the ball, in an effort to make the play safer. The Elias Sports Bureau found that 43.5 percent of kickoffs led to touchbacks in 2010, a rise of nearly 30 percent from 2010.

Also, players suffered 40 percent fewer concussions on kickoffs in 2011, McKay told ESPN The Magazine.

A Healthy Derrick Rose’s Bulls Are Better Than LeBron James’ Cavs

This time, we should know better. If there’s one thing sports has consistently taught us over the years, it’s that super teams do not work like magic. Recent history speaks for itself. Gary Peyton and Karl Malone joining Shaq and Kobe didn’t hand the 2004 Lakers an NBA title. Acquiring an ungodly amount of talent, headlined by […]

Russell Westbrook’s Broken Hand Will Certainly Not Help OKC’s Season

When one door closes, another opens. Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. Despite that being what I’ve learned about life opportunities, I’m having trouble looking on the bright side of Russell Westbrook’s newly broken hand. When a particularly tricky brand of broken foot put Kevin Durant out of commission a few weeks ago, a […]

I began watching HBO’s original television series, “Girls” with my best friend on a cold night on the couch in my California living room. But, once we had successfully gotten […]

Why It’s Good That The Hong Kong Protests Have No Leaders

There is a fine line between decision makers and leaders. Hong Kong protesters provide a beautiful example of anarchism in practice. Though it is not explicitly an anarchist movement, it does hold qualities of anarchist political movements. There is a trio of decision makers; however, for many of the protesters, there is no leader they […]
