Olympic Athlete Takes Only Medal He Won In Rio And Sells It For Over $100K

Piotr Malachowski must have been over the moon after capturing the silver medal in the men's discus throw final at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

It was the Polish Olympian's only medal of the Rio Games in Brazil, but he just sold his prize for a reported $130,000. However, Malachowski didn't sell his medal because he needed the cash or owed a bookie who was threatening to break his legs.

The 33-year-old Malachowski reportedly sold his silver medal in order to pay for the treatment of a 3-year-old boy with eye cancer.

Malachowski reportedly stated two wealthy Polish siblings, Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk, "declared the intention to buy my silver medal" in order to help pay for medication for 3-year-old Olek, who has retinoblastoma.

Though the specific amount of the sale allegedly hasn't been revealed, Malachowski said his target of roughly 500,000 zlotys, or $130,000, has been achieved.

Speaking on his heroic contribution for Olek, the Polish discus thrower reportedly said,

My silver medal is worth much more today than it was a week ago.

This Olympian clearly gets it, and we can all learn a lesson by taking a page out his playbook.
