Oscar Pistorius Will Serve Just 10 Months Of His 5-Year Jail Sentence

by Adam Silvers

South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius made international headlines when he was convicted of culpable homicide after killing his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14, 2013.

Pistorius, who says he shot Steenkamp because he thought she was a home intruder, received a five-year sentence for the crime.

Many thought that sentence was unbelievably light.

Well, that sentence got even lighter today when it was announced Pistorius will be released on parole on August 21, despite serving just 10 months of the five-year sentence.

This past June, Zach Modise, the South African correctional services' national commissioner, reportedly said,

He's behaving himself very well.

Prosecutors can still try Pistorius for murder, and if he's convicted, he would be sentenced to at least 15 years behind bars.
