Report: NFL Is Considering Making The Fields Wider

It has been reported by National Football Post that the NFL is considering expanding the width of the field from 160 feet to 195 feet, similar to that of the field in the Canadian Football League.

This is in attempt to make the game safer by limiting the amount of concussions that occur in such a limited space.

While it has been proven that larger fields help prevent injuries in the CFL (they are also 30 yards higher), that would mean a lot of change for not only the players but the stadiums they play in.

While this would increase yardage totals, the fields would have to be altered in what is already a tight space and some owners may not be willing to do that. It is hard to imagine all parties coming to a compromise any time soon.

This is a double-edged sword between player health and, of course, business revenue. I guess we’ll see what Commissioner Roger Goodell values more.
