Syracuse receiver Marcus Sales is back on the football team after serving a season-long suspension for his arrest on drug charges, coach Doug Marrone said Friday. Those charges were dropped in October, paving the way for Sales to make his return.

“He’s on the football team,” Marrone said during a news conference to discuss Syracuse’s upcoming schedule. “He’s enrolled in school with no issues in school, so there’s no issues with being a part of the program.”

Sales and his brother, Michael, were arrested in July 2011 following a traffic stop. Marcus Sales was charged with multiple counts of drug possession after police found an open container of alcohol, several bags of marijuana, a bag of painkilling pills, and several digital scales in the car.

Marcus Sales was suspended following his arrest. But the charges against him were dropped in October when a grand jury failed to find enough evidence with which to charge him.

Getting Sales back is big news for the Orange, who are losing four of their top five receivers going into 2012. In addition, leading receiver Alec Lemon will sit out spring practice following shoulder surgery.

In 2010, his last full season, Sales finished second on the team with 26 catches for 414 yards and four touchdowns.

Michael Sales last month was sentenced to five years’ probation after pleading guilty to one felony count of possession of a controlled substance.
