Sloane Stephens defeated Serena Williams, advances to Australian Open Semis. Sloane Stephens has arrived. She’s 19, ranked 25th in the world, and Tuesday she beat Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

With this defeat, Sloane became the first American player younger than Serena to ever hand her a loss.

Serena, who suffered a back injury during the second set and had to take an injury timeout, might take this “L” kind of hard. She is Sloane’s tennis idol, and has become a mentor to her and Sloane played her tough.

However, looking for Sloane to supplant the Williams sisters, and more pointedly, Serena, as the next big thing may be premature; but she’s certainly carving her own place on the circuit.

She has yet to win a singles title, but we can expect to see her dominate in years to come, and I think sooner than later.

Stephens will face No. 1 ranked Victoria Azarenka in the semi finals. The other semi-finals match with be between Maria Sharapova and Li Na.

All and all, James Gilbert brings that dynamic and balance to the team, rounding out Elite Daily’s Voltron (or that thing the Power Rangers formed for you young whippersnappers.)

Condoms, condoms everywhere, but not a rubber to be found. The word we used to cringe at in health class is now a word on the brink of extinction. The small piece of latex in the candy-colored wrapper we once associated with maturity and sexual awakening has skipped our adolescence, passed over our 20s and […]

Why The Children Are The Answer To The Israel-Gaza Conflict

In 2009, I wrote an article in Syracuse’s leading newspaper, The Post Standard, regarding the conflict between Gaza and Israel. It is heartbreaking to say that five years later, that same crisis stands stronger than ever. The same bombs plummet, manifesting chaos and debris that fills innocent children’s lungs. Then, their parents die before them, […]

How One Baseball Player’s Amazing Story Inspired The Ice Bucket Challenge (Video)

For the waves of people who have accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge this summer, there was really only one important thing to know beforehand: the freezing cold water being poured on top of their heads would help raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. But even beyond that very sufficient reasoning, there’s an amazing story that few […]
