Well that expression doesn’t necessarily rhyme as well as the original, research is beginning to prove that an apple a day can have more positive effects than just keeping the doctor away.

New research is showing that those who regularly eat fruit, particularly apples, may have better chances of weight loss. This research also shows that apples may play an important role in our long term overall wellness due to the many antioxidants they contain.

One small apple has approximately 48 calories, contains soluble fiber, potassium, vitamin C, small amounts of vitamin E and protein. Apples also contain high levels of quercetin that may improve the antioxidant activity of the blood.

Studies have shown that people with higher quercetin intakes have a lower than normal risk of heart disease and stroke. Apples also contain pectin, which may help lower cholesterol, have a low glycemic index and can even help keep blood sugar levels down.
