It’s Possible: Healthy Carbs

by Ally Batista

Carb. The four-letter word has such a negative stigma attached to it. Unfortunately, carbs are frowned upon in skinny girl society. Carb-free diets are the most common diets amongst women attempting to lose weight.

If you’re like me, this is miserable. I love carbs. Carbs are my favorite food group, and as much as I hate the weight, I can’t resist a huge bowl of pasta every now and then. However, it turns out that I may be in luck.

Luna Bar has been in the process of releasing a video series called “Debunking the Diet.” One of their video installments focused on the evil (but incredible) carbs. The video is called “Debunking the Diet: Is Carb a Four-Letter Word?” and its mission is to let everyone know that carbs, every once in a while, are good for you.

We need a certain amount of carbohydrates a day for our brains and bodies to even work properly, so why do we deny our bodies this essential nutrient? Not all carbs are created equal, and by this, I mean that there are good carbs and bad carbs.

Don’t shy away from the good carbs. Your brain and body will especially thank you if you tried incorporating these four carbs into your diet:

Quinoa

A grain that is filled with fiber, protein, antioxidants and heart healthy fats.

Barley

A Soluble fiber that helps keep your blood cholesterol levels healthy, along with being super-filling.

Wheat Berries

Whole, unprocessed kernels of wheat that are great sources of iron, vitamin B, magnesium, zinc, and fiber.

Bulgur

Cracked, parboiled wheat that provides protein and fiber to your diet.

Will you be eating these carbohydrates more often?
