MAC Cosmetics' Latest Collaboration Is The Definition Of Luxury

On November 26, MAC Cosmetics will unveil its annual holiday collection created in collaboration with fashion designer Prabal Gurung.

The 14-piece collection includes all of the standard makeup elements, including luxurious lipsticks in rich scarlet and violet hues, as well as shimmery glosses, eye and lip pencils and eye shadows. Also available is a small selection of fluffy brushes for bronzer and blush application.

Gurung’s decision to dive into the cosmetics world was inspired, in part, by his mother. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, the designer explained,

My first foray into fashion was when I was back home in Nepal. Like many other designers, it was about my mother. I still remember her vanity case. She’d come back from work and sit in front of the mirror to get ready. I think one of the most powerful things that a woman has is that quiet time — it’s a process of transformation.

His mother’s influence — and signature red lip — is reflected in Carmine Rouge, a creamy red lipstick and standout in the collection.

Though the makeup is all stunning, the real pièce de résistance of the collaboration is the opulent packaging.

In an interview with InStyle, Gurung explained,

It's very rare that I look and the compact is of interest. I wanted it to be something that almost becomes an object of art.

Drawing inspiration from artists Damien Hirst and Sylvie Fleury, the gilded gold packaging is detailed with a chainlink pattern and has a distinctive, Old Hollywood glamour-esque flair.

MAC's decision to team with Prabal Gurung was an easy one, as the two have been working together since the designer launched his eponymous label in 2009.

This is the beauty company’s highest-end collaboration to date, with prices ranging from $20 for eye and lip pencils to $70 for bronzer and brushes.

The collection will be available at MAC stores nationwide, online on November 26 and internationally in December.

We’d recommend shopping the selection sooner rather than later: This collaboration is sure to be one of the most sought-after gifts this holiday season.
