Beyoncé Is Joining Forces With Topshop To Create An Activewear Line

by Gillian Fuller

Monday morning, Vogue UK announced that British high-street retailer Topshop is teaming up with Beyoncé to create an activewear label.

Set to launch next year, the line will include clothing, footwear and athletic accessories.

Unlike traditional celebrity collaborations, Beyoncé’s venture with Topshop will be a 50-50 partnership, meaning the star will be working closely with the company's creative team to create the product.

However, as the label will be separate from Topshop’s own, the company will be hiring a separate team to head the Beyoncé activewear line.

Philip Green, the owner of Arcadia Group (which operates Topshop), explains,

This is not a collaboration. This is about building a brand and building a business -- a separate, proper business, with separate overhead and a separate office…

We have been looking at this (athletics) category as fashion-inspired fitness develops, and know that this is right in our customers’ heartland. Creating a partnership with Beyoncé, one of the most hard-working and talented people in the world, who spends many hours of her life dancing, rehearsing, and training, is a unique opportunity to develop this category. Being partners with Beyoncé and her team, who have the greatest creative energy and enthusiasm, is inspiring for all of the team at Topshop.

In a statement today, the pop star said she is “looking forward to participating in all aspects of [the] partnership,” confirming that the creative effort will be completely split between Topshop and herself.

The label will make its retail debut in Fall 2015.
