Emma Watson Delivers Another Powerful Speech On Feminism

by Gillian Fuller

Last September, actress and United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson delivered a now-famous speech to announce the launch of a new UN campaign called He for She.

The purpose of the groundbreaking campaign, spearheaded by Watson herself, is to urge men and boys to become advocates for gender equality and women’s rights.

This morning, Watson held a press conference at the World Economic Forum to announce He for She’s newest initiative, called the Impact 10x10x10 Program.

As the actress said, the program “is about engaging governments, businesses, and universities, and having them make concrete commitments to gender equality.”

The goal of the new program, she explained, is not only to encourage policy changes and feminist initiatives, but also, for those involved to speak up about how their commitments to He for She has impacted their lives and communities.

Feedback from Watson’s initial speech revealed many feel uncertain of how they, as individuals, can make a difference.

She promises any activism is a step in the right direction, and that, at its core, “the Impact 10x10x10 initiative is about concrete commitments to change, the visibility of these commitments, and the[ir] measurability.”

Though this speech was far less sensational than the last, Watson’s commitment to the organization and to the pursuit of gender equality is clear.

Her honest passion for women’s rights is palpable, and most importantly, it inspires. With her at the helm, we have a feeling He for She will achieve everything it sets out to do.
