Domestic violence is a real issue. Nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced physical violence, stalking, or rape from an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Milan-based artist AleXsandro Palombo focused on the female victims of domestic abuse in his art project, "No Violence Against Women." He created posters of famous cartoon characters, like Marge Simpson, Wonder Woman, Snow White and more, who have been beaten by their husbands.

His goal was to cast the issue into the spotlight, purposely using "the most iconic cartoon characters of all time" to give it an extra kick.

The pictures show male partners smiling and standing next to their battered wives, pretending like nothing is wrong. This emphasizes how widespread the problem is, even among couples who appear normal on the surface.

Reports suggest that between 55 and 95 percent of female victims of domestic abuse do not seek non-governmental organizations, shelters, or the police for help.
