Are More Women Becoming Hardcore Gamers?

by Ally Batista

Growing up, video games were for the boys. My brother would roll his eyes and scoff if I even so much as asked him to play a video game with him, but it seems that now, those stereotypes are a thing of the past.

According to a new study, 42 percent of gamers (someone who dedicates hours a week to video games) are in fact, professional women. This statistic includes games played on handheld devices (iPads and iPhones included).

Game Informer magazine even said that 50 percent of the website’s users are females who play games such as Call of Duty and Mass Effect.

Want an even more surprising statistic? 64 percent of female online gamers are over the age of 35, with the average age being 42.
