As Women Get Older, Their Halloween Costumes Become More Sexualized (Photos)

by Emily Arata

Halloween represents an uncomfortable mix of childish innocence and adult sexuality.

Perhaps "Mean Girls" teen queen Cady Heron said it best when she stated,

In the regular world, Halloween is when children dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.

An Imgur user decided to prove the over-sexualization of Halloween costumes once and for all.

Costumes made for babies, children, teens and adults presented together show the shortened hemlines, bare midriffs and fishnets that come with adulthood.

There’s a clear trend here. If you purchase a ready-made costume as an adult woman, you’re expected to show a lot of skin.

It’s also interesting to observe how early changes happen to the costumes. Even costumes for children suddenly feature sheer paneling and short, frilly tutus. And while those elements aren’t problematic in and of themselves, they’re a foreboding sign of the costume modifications yet to come.

Whether you decide to be a zombie ex-wife or a mouse (duh!) this Halloween, make sure you feel comfortable in the costume.

The ever-sultry bumble bee quickly loses its clothing.

The witch goes from cute to sexy.

A wide-eyed unicorn quickly becomes a coquettish Manga dream.

The pirate's booty, and everything else, is on display here.

What happened to the white tights?

Minnie Mouse gives "mini" a new meaning.

This starts as a cat but becomes a tutu with a feather boa attached.

Dorothy recently left Kansas for Las Vegas.

Devil wings seem hotly contested here.

Angels appreciate lace-up dresses, too.
