Relationship goals — pun intended.
Rapinoe isn’t always as confident as she seems on the field. In a 2021 interview with GQ, she recalled first meeting Bird at a photo shoot for the 2016 Olympics and jokingly asking if she was headed to a game: “I walked away like, ‘You’re an idiot.’”
In 2017, Bird told ESPNW, “I’m gay. Megan’s my girlfriend. These aren’t secrets to people who know me.” A week later, Bird shared a photo with Rapinoe on Instagram for the first time.
After Donald Trump slammed Rapinoe for saying she wouldn’t visit the White House if invited, Bird wrote an essay for The Players’ Tribune — titled “So the President F*cking Hates My Girlfriend” — in defense of her “kissable goofball queen.”
In a November 2020 appearance on The Tonight Show, Rapinoe revealed she didn’t plan her romantic marriage proposal to Bird. “I didn't have a special ring,” she said. “I didn't know exactly when I was gonna do it but just, like, the perfect moment presented itself.”
Couples who successfully quarantine together, stay together. “We've essentially spent every single day together since the beginning of March,” Rapinoe told People in November 2020. "And it's been such a gift, to be honest.”
It’s hard to choose the cutest moment from this joint interview, but one contender is definitely Rapinoe’s quote about the start of her relationship with Bird: “It was just immediately like, ‘Oh, this is home.’”
Rapinoe and Bird are headed to Tokyo! Although Rapinoe told InStyle they might not spend a lot of time together thanks to COVID safety rules, these two are lucky enough to be fiancées and Olympic training buddies. How many couples get to say that?
