Why A Sense Of Humor Is Key To Getting The Guy, As Told By Kaitlyn Bristowe
There's no denying it's awesome dating someone who has a similar tolerance for goofiness and weirdness as you do. I love it when a guy is a bit weird or quirky because that's what makes him interesting, charming, unique and hilarious.
While many argue opposites attract in relationships (as someone balances out what the other lacks), that's not a true concept at all when it comes to your sense of humor. When you're navigating the dating scene, you'll find that you get along best with those who have a similar sense of humor to yours. If you think complete opposite things are funny, you'll just annoy each other.
I spoke to last season's star of "The Bachelorette," Kaitlyn Bristowe, about this because it's clear she gave the final rose to Shawn Booth partly due to his general appreciation of her quirks and his ability to keep up with her sense of humor. Anyone who watches their Snapchats will know they're hilarious together, and they feed off each other in an awesome way.
Kaitlyn was recently Babe of the Month on my blog The Babe Report, and during our exclusive interview, we touched on how important goofiness and humor is in relationships. With a little advice from the previous bachelorette and my own experiences in dating, here are five reasons why quirks and humor are key ingredients in today's relationships:
1. Being weird together is the ultimate bonding experience.
Of course, it's important to date someone who gets your sense of humor, but you should also date someone who keeps up with (and appreciates) your quirks, your goofiness and your weirdness.
Kaitlyn told me she thinks her quirks are what Shawn loves the most about her, and that's one of the reasons their connection is so strong:
I always looked for someone who appreciated my sense of humor and someone who could keep up with it. The million-dollar question (my family) had for him was, 'Will you be able to keep up with Kaitlyn?'
She continued,
Let me tell you, he not only keeps up, but he joins in. From letting Shawn do my makeup, to Shawn letting me style his precious hair, to dance-offs and constantly laughing together, we know that humor keeps our relationship strong. I always say that lovers are lunatics, and that's not a bad thing.
Kaitlyn told me that her fun side has made her realize how much she values a sense of humor in a partner. Kaitlyn and Shawn are the perfect example of a couple who both possess a very similar level of goofiness, and it just works.
2. It's important to date someone who doesn't carry a mountain of negativity with him.
There's a reason why almost all of us would include "a good sense of humor" at the top of our checklist of qualities we look for in a partner, and why we'd put "a negative attitude" near the bottom. There's something to be said for not taking life too seriously, and possessing a lightness and a playfulness paints you out to be a happy, confident and intriguing person.
Someone who carries a lot of stress or negativity with him won't be able to laugh with you as easily. Also, if he's moody, he likely won't have the greatest sense of humor. Would you enjoy dating someone like that? Probably not.
I've personally always gravitated toward the funny guy because he calms me down and brings me back down to earth whenever I'm feeling uptight or stressed out. Laughter is a natural stress-reducer, which is why we become more attracted to someone when we find out how funny he is.
3. Laughing together is proof that you're connecting.
Have you ever been on a date with someone who didn't laugh at any of your jokes? Either this person is severely uptight and can't laugh at anything, or this person just doesn't think you're funny. Neither scenario is ideal.
When it comes to dating, laughing together is proof you're connecting. A date without humor is boring, dull and lame. We all want to date someone who's entertaining and fun to be around, and someone quirky is exactly that. Just like Kaitlyn and Shawn, any couple who is always laughing at each other's jokes or quirks is obviously a couple who truly "gets" each other.
4. A healthy sense of humor is super attractive.
There's something so sexy about someone who makes me laugh. It's even better if I can also make him laugh because most people look a hell of a lot cuter when they smile.
Have you ever noticed that the funnier someone is, the more attractive he becomes? It's common to go on a first date with someone who isn't your usual type physically. While you may not be attracted to him at first, his funny and interesting personality can come out on the date and suddenly make him attractive. Funny and quirky people are attractive; it's just the truth.
5. You can have fun together no matter where you are or what you're doing.
When you have very similar personalities when it comes to playfulness, weirdness and humor, you're winning. Why? Because it ensures that you'll genuinely enjoy each other's company and have fun together no matter what you're doing.
Whether you're stuck in an airport together due to a delayed flight, grocery shopping or just at home making a protein shake, if your partner is always making you laugh one way or another, you've found a keeper.
I remember recently watching Kaitlyn and Shawn make a protein shake on Snapchat, and they were laughing hysterically as she was trying to catch the ingredients he was throwing at her. All I could think to myself was,"I'm pretty sure I never had that much fun making a protein shake with my last boyfriend." But hey, if Kaitlyn and Shawn can find a love like this, there's no reason why the rest of us can't find it, too.
