Calvin DGAF About Taylor Swift, Drops His Own Music Video For “Hard To Love”
Calvin Harris just dropped his new music video for "Hard To Love," and it's crazy catchy and super sexy. It also comes just weeks after Taylor Swift's video, "Look What You Made Me Do." Why does that have relevance? It's obvious, isn't it? Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris dated for, like, ever, and there were several references in her new music video about Harris. Who really knows if the rumors are true, but what we do know is Calvin Harris' "Hard To Love" music video is amazing. The video features the multi-talented Jessie Reyez. In the video, Reyez is singing and riding a skateboard. There is no way I could do that. Get it, girl.
The video, which is set in the beautiful city of Amsterdam, is sultry and smooth, and Reyez's voice is literally everything. Also, it makes me want to hop on a plane to Europe immediately. Put me in one of your cool music videos, Harris. I am available. Reyez, who was named one of the 13 rising artists from Toronto, is no stranger to success. Her track, "Figures," which was released in 2016, brought the artist millions of new fans and got Harris' attention.
Reyez praised both Calvin and the video's director, Philip Harris, in a statement from Complex:
I love Calvin Harris and Philip Harris. They are not brothers... but I love them both the same, music producer and video director.
I have a feeling Reyez isn't going away anytime soon.
The great thing about this video is that it's the polar opposite of Swift's video, "Look What You Made Me Do." In Swift's video, she plays a sassy drama queen, out for revenge from all of her many haters. She swings bats, robs banks, and kills off all the old Taylors. It's intense. Harris' new video, on the other hand, is filled with downtempo beats, soft melodies, and Reyez's soothing voice. It's almost like Harris is responding to Swift, saying, "chill, girl."
In August of 2017, Harris also dropped an alternate version of his "Feels" video featuring Big Sean, Katy Perry, and Pharrell, and it was amazing. Who wouldn't love a song featuring Perry, Pharrell, and Big Sean, though? Harris is a busy dude.
The drama between Harris and Swift all began when fans speculated Swift's video, "Look What You Made Me Do," referenced their dramatic breakup. Fans think Harris proposed to Swift because of a certain scene in the “Look What You Made Me Do” music video, and she said no. Ouch.
Let me explain. In the robbery scene where Swift swings a baseball bat in the store, you can spot a tiny, dark engagement ring box directly behind her on a stack of money. Also, there's a heart necklace that spells out the word “no” in the diamond jewelry bathtub scene. The heart necklace has a lot of meaning because Harris gave Swift a necklace that looks almost identical to the one in her music video. The drama continues to unfold. This new Calvin Harris video is probably sending Swift fans over the edge. So, which team are you rooting for? Team Harris or Team Swift? Personally, I'm team Harris after seeing his new video. I just looove it.
You can always find a deeper meaning in all of Taylor Swift's music videos. Can the same be said about Harris' videos? I reviewed the "Hard to Love" music video with a fine-toothed comb and could not find even a trace of any Taylor Swift references. There were no engagement rings, blonde lookalikes, or hidden Swift lyrics. The only thing I could find that might be directed at Swift are the lyrics, "I'd rather be hard to love than easy to leave." Whoa. Was Swifty hard to love or easy to leave? We'll never know.
