Cracking a smile in your family Christmas photo is usually the right thing to do, whether you've had a joyful holiday season or not.

But, if you're a Kardashian-West, there's obviously an exception to that rule — especially this year.

Kanye West pretty much summed up his family's entire 2016 with one solemn holiday photo that he tweeted this afternoon.

Quiet honestly, I'm a little frightened by their lack of expression in the picture.

The photo was captioned "Happy Holidays." Nothing less, nothing more.

As you can see, the family is standing in front of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Mom's holding North, dad's holding Saint and they all look like they want absolutely nothing to do with the picture.

At first, I thought maybe it was a vogue thing. You know, models make pouty faces from time to time and look sultry AF.

But, something tells me this photo isn't meant to be edgy. Instead, I think their all just a little on edge.

Take a closer look:

Not even their kids are smiling. What kids aren't excited about Christmas?

OK, maybe I'm being a little harsh. There's not doubt this family had a year from hell, and I'm sure the rocks are still settling.

Believe it or not, it's only been a little over three months since Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint, and she is still shaken from the Paris break-in.

On top of that, it's only been about one month since Kanye's mental breakdown.

These wounds are fresh, people.

To put the cherry on top of a horrific year for the famous fam, it's been reported both Kanye and Kim are seeing separate therapists to deal with their own traumas.

OK, OK, now I understand why their holiday photo might not look as cheery and bright as we might've expected.

Regardless of their downward spiraling year, I hope they did have a nice holiday off-camera.

Cheers to 2017, Kardashian-Wests. Keep smiling (or trying to)!
