These 11 Chris Rock Quotes Perfectly Explain #OscarsSoWhite

by Joseph Milord

Chris Rock wasted no time when he took the stage to host the 88th Academy Awards.

After a montage of great cinematic performances opened up the show, the comedian gleefully noted,

I counted at least 15 black people in that montage!

With that, Rock went on to deliver a killer monologue that perfectly explained the top trending topic that has hovered over the awards since the nominees were announced.

Here are 11 quotes that perfectly explain #OscarsSoWhite.

On what the Oscars should also be known as:

Welcome to the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the White People's Choice Awards!

On his what his job status would be if it were up to the Academy:

You realize if they nominated hosts, I wouldn't even get this job. You all would be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now.

On why outrage over the Oscars and race seems new:

When your grandmother's swingin' from the tree, it's really hard to care about best documentary foreign short.

On whether Hollywood is racist:

You're damn right Hollywood is racist.

On the "type" of racist Hollywood is:

It's not the racist you're accustomed to. Hollywood is sorority racist, like, 'We like you, Rhonda, but you're not a Kappa.'

On the widely perceived lack of inclusion being nothing new:

It's the 88th Academy Awards, which means that whole 'no black nominees' thing happened at least 71 times.

On Hollywood's "type" of racist:

They don't hire black people. And they're the nicest white people on earth. They're liberals!

On how the Oscars will be "different" this year:

On Jada Pinkett-Smith's boycott of the awards show:

Jada boycotting the oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties. I wasn't invited!

On why boycotting would be a terrible idea:

People are like, 'Chris, you should boycott. How come only unemployed people ask you to quit something? No one with a job tells you to quit. I thought about quitting, [but] they're not going to cancel the Oscars. The last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart.

On what the whole point of #OscarsSoWhite is:

It's not about boycotting. We want opportunity; we want the same opportunities, that's it. Not just once.
