His family moved to America from Russia for his father to practice medicine when he was just 6 years old.

In kindergarten, he only spoke Russian.

I did know three English words: yes, no and maybe. On the first day of school in Brooklyn, my teacher assumed I spoke English and asked me a question. I said "yes," so she moved on. She asked me another question. I said "no," and she moved on. She decided to clarify with another question. When I said "maybe," she knew I had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.

2. He values his family.

His mother passed away in the midst of an accelerated seven-year program.

Losing a mother was indescribable, and it was even more difficult watching a parent suffer from the loss of a loved one.

At the time, he was living alone, but he moved back in with his father to help him get back on his feet.

After losing his mother, he continued to go to medical school while driving home for two hours every day.

3. He is not driven by money.

He was raised by a family that was happy with nothing.

Not only did his family struggle financially, they even lived in a one-bedroom apartment with four people.

I still remember, to this day, begging my parents for a quarter to buy a bag of chips. What I learned from all of this is having a lot of money does not change your happiness level once your basic needs are accounted for.

Doctor Mike wants to be an inspirational figure to those in and out of the medical field.

He has made several appearances at schools and on talk shows to motivate people to be proactive.

His biggest regret is not being grateful enough for his parents, who sacrificed a comfortable life to move to an unknown country.

During college, he took a trip to Israel.

On one of the nights, they slept with Bedouin monks in the desert.

Foolishly, he decided to explore beyond the campsite to get a taste of what the desert was all about.
