Tully Hart

Bad-girl Tully became BFFs with Kate, the nerd next door, at 14. Tully became a star at their news network before hosting her own daytime talk show. But she always envied/admired Kate's comfortable home life.

Kate Mularkey

Kate was innocent and rule-abiding until Tully came into her life. She followed Tully into journalism, but she wanted a husband, first dating Mutt before marrying journalist Johnny Ryan and having her daughter, Marah. But she always envied/admired Tully's success.

Johnny Ryan

Johnny initially desired Tully, but she pushed him to date Kate, who he then married. He’s been Tully’s producer for decades but decided to return to journalism and embed in Iraq. It was the last straw for Kate, who filed for divorce.

Marah Ryan

Kate and Johnny’s daughter was in her rebellious teen phase, only comfortable talking to Aunt Tully. But Tully crossed the line in covering for the girl, sparking a massive rift between her and Kate as jealousies and resentments rose to the surface.

Cloud

Tully’s hippie mother, Cloud, was unreliable throughout Tully’s childhood, flitting from man to man and job to job. Tully cut her mom out of her life, but Cloud’s return to her orbit in her adult life upended Tully’s world.

Bud & Margie Mularkey

Kate’s parents seemed idyllic to Tully, but they had secrets, like Margie’s affair. Still, the two were a rock for Kate, and when Bud passed away, the funeral was a heartbreak for Kate, compounded by Tully’s arrival despite them being on the outs.

Sean Mularkey

Kate’s older brother is gay, though for most of his life, only Tully knew this. When Kate finally found out, it was yet another betrayal, with Tully keeping secrets from her.

Max Brody

As Tully pushed 40, she realized time was running out on starting a family. She threw herself at Max, a nice enough young man, and even married him once she got pregnant. But they annulled it after she miscarried.
