At first glance, Ginny & Georgia might seem like a sweet and simple mother-daughter story. But dive in and you’ll find a lot of dark mystery woven into the plot of the show. As the Season 2 premiere approaches, it’s time for a Ginny & Georgia Season 1 recap of all the drama.

Netflix

The series began with Georgia (Brianne Howey) moving her 15-year-old daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and 9-year-old son Austin (Diesel La Torraca) to idyllic Wellsbury, Massachusetts, for a fresh start after her husband (and Ginny and Austin’s stepdad) Kenny’s sudden demise.

After spending most of her life moving, Ginny was nervous to set down roots in Wellsbury. But she quickly got close to Max (Sara Waisglass) and her friends Abby (Katie Douglas) and Norah (Chelsea Clark). They even formed the (kinda weird) acronym MANG from their names.

Netflix

Georgia started working for Wellsbury’s mayor, Paul Randolph (Scott Porter), and they soon started dating. Romance was in the air for Ginny, too, as she started dating Hunter (Mason Temple). But no matter how hard Ginny tried, the relationship didn’t feel right.

Netflix

Part of the reason Ginny couldn’t make it work with Hunter was Max’s twin brother, Marcus (Felix Mallard). Ginny wound up breaking up with Hunter, hooking up with Marcus, and having a huge fight with Max because of it.

Netflix

Meanwhile, Austin had a rough time adjusting to school since his bully made fun of him for thinking his dad, Gil, was in prison in Azkaban, since that’s where Georgia said she was sending Austin’s letters to him.

Netflix

Meanwhile, Austin’s bully’s mom, Cynthia Fuller (Sabrina Grdevich), was running for mayor against Paul and discovered Georgia embezzled funds from the mayor’s office. She tried to take Georgia down, but Cynthia lost the election and couldn't prove Georgia’s guilt.

Netflix

It turned out Georgia was actually keeping Austin’s letters to his dad and forging the replies. But Ginny discovered this and actually sent the letters to Gil, a fact that seemed to truly scare the usually unflappable Georgia.

Netflix

Ginny’s photographer dad, Zion (Nathan Mitchell), put down roots in Massachusetts, and he and Georgia nearly got back together. But ultimately, they decided to stay apart and Georgia got engaged to Paul.

Netflix

Ginny got a job at a local café owned by a friendly guy named Joe (Raymond Ablack). It turned out, Joe and Georgia actually met 15 years ago and they share a special bond.

Netflix

All throughout, there were a bunch of flashbacks to Georgia’s past, which revealed she had a controlling first husband who she murdered. It was also revealed that Georgia poisoned her second husband, Kenny, after she saw him acting inappropriately toward Ginny.

Netflix

Kenny’s first wife hired a private investigator, Gabriel Cordova (Alex Mallari Jr.), to look into Georgia. Gabriel couldn’t pin it all on Georgia, but when he questioned Ginny, Ginny figured out the truth about her mom’s past.

Netflix

Even with Georgia’s insistence that everything she’s ever done has been to protect Ginny and Austin, Ginny was pretty upset to learn the truth about her mom. At the end of Season 1, she packed up, took Marcus’ motorcycle, and left town with Austin.

Ginny & Georgia Season 1 is on Netflix now; Season 2 premieres Netflix on Jan. 5.
