After almost 20 years on the air, Grey’s Anatomy has gone through a whole lot of story and it can be hard to keep track. As Season 19 gets going, here’s the recap you need on all the Grey’s Anatomy drama from Season 18.
ABC
Meredith
Meredith began the season splitting her time between Seattle and Minnesota while she worked on Parkinson’s research. That time in the Midwest worked out for her relationship with Nick, but when the residency program at Grey Sloan was in trouble, she went home.
ABC/Liliane Lathan
Nick
Nick and Mere’s relationship got to grow with all of Meredith’s extra time in Minnesota, and Nick also made the trip to Seattle to help out at Grey Sloan during the doctor shortage. But in the end, Meredith went back to Seattle without him.
ABC
Amelia
Amelia also spent time in Minnesota working on the Parkinson’s research, and she sparked up a new relationship with Dr. Kai Bartley, but they split up when Kai told her they didn’t want to be a parent.
ABC/Liliane Lathan
Maggie
After her honeymoon with Winston, Maggie returned to Grey Sloan and had some family drama. First, she butted heads with Richard over his Webber teaching method, and then she dealt with some unresolved issues with her birth mother, Ellis, when she found letters from her.
ABC
Winston
Winston settled into newlywed life with Maggie, but not without a few bumps in the road. His estranged brother Wendell showed up and tried to scam Winston by selling faulty medical supplies, and that familial strife also put a strain on his marriage.
ABC
Jo
Jo continued her work as an OB/GYN resident and as a new mom to baby Luna. Things with Link got complicated when she realized she loved him, and she tried to distract herself with a relationship with a grad student named Todd. But she broke up with him, and Jo wound up single.
ABC/Liliane Lathan
Link
Link struggled after his breakup with Amelia and wanted to get back together with her, but she shot him down. He also seemed jealous of Jo’s new boyfriend, but ended the season just friends with Jo.
ABC/Liliane Lathan
Schmitt
Schmitt spiraled a bit after he lost a patient on the table, so he left his job and broke up with Nico. But after his mother was injured during a fall and needed his help, he returned to Grey Sloan.
ABC
Owen & Teddy
Owen secretly (and illegally) gave a veteran life-ending drugs and promised to distribute more drugs to vets who asked for them. But after Teddy found out, she made him stop. A veteran’s wife threatened to reveal his secret, so he and Teddy had to go into hiding.
ABC
Hayes
During an almost-fatal car accident, Owen told Hayes about his illegal drug distribution. When they all survived the crash, Hayes struggled with the fact that he was now implicated in Owen’s crime. He made the tough decision to return to Ireland with his family.
ABC
Richard
Richard tried to implement the “Webber method,” which would allow residents to operate without an attending present during simple surgeries. But after Schmitt lost a patient, the method was put into question and Richard stepped back from leading the residency program.
ABC/Liliane Lathan
Bailey
Bailey was super stressed all season long as she tried (and failed) to keep the residency program afloat. By the end of the season, Grey Sloan’s residency program lost its accreditation, and Bailey quit in order to have some much-deserved me-time.
ABC
