It was, of course, dramatic.

Long before he became the new host of The Bachelor, Jesse Palmer was the Bachelor himself. Way back in 2004, Jesse Palmer searched for love throughout Season 5 of The Bachelor, so he knows a thing or two about the franchise. Here are the highlights from Jesse’s Bachelor season.

Jesse was only 25 years old during his Bachelor season, making him the youngest Bachelor in franchise history to this day.

Jesse was born Toronto, Ontario, and raised in Nepean, Ontario, which is a suburb of Ottawa. That makes Jesse also the franchise’s first Bachelor born outside the U.S.

Jesse had some extra help making sense of the 25 women competing during his season. One of those women was actually his friend’s wife, Jenny Schillari, who acted as a spy and gave him intel on the other women until she was eliminated in Week 3.

Jesse’s season of The Bachelor marked another first for the franchise. In Season 5, the show introduced the First Impression Rose for the first time, which Jesse gave to Trish Schneider.

Trish had a memorable exit from Jesse’s season, in that she refused to exit. She returned the episode after she was eliminated to give Jesse her hotel room key in case he changed his mind. Jesse chose to make their breakup stick.

ABC

Jesse created one of the most memorable Bachelor Nation moments ever when he accidentally called the wrong woman’s name during his first rose ceremony. All I can say is, poor Katie.

During the Bachelor Season 5 finale, Jesse broke up with his runner-up, Tara Huckeby, by telling her he was in love with someone else. She scolded him for leading her on and said his actions had been “inappropriate” if he didn’t see a future with her.

ABC

In the end, Jesse broke Bachelor franchise tradition by asking Jessica Bowlin, his final rose recipient, if she wanted to explore a relationship with him without getting engaged, and she said yes.

Jesse and Jessica didn’t last long as a couple, though. They split up a few months after Jesse’s Bachelor season ended.
