Idiots On Twitter Had No Idea Who Missy Elliott Was Last Night
Last month, the Internet got incredibly angry at the mere suggestion that there might be people in the world who have never heard of Paul McCartney, the up-and-coming artist with no other achievements to his name besides being on a song with Kanye West.
The problem with the outrage generated by these tweets from seemingly ignorant music fans was that the tweets were jokes -- a fact that should have been fairly obvious to anyone familiar with Twitter and the concept of "jokes" as a whole.
Were there people out there who had never heard of Paul McCartney?
Probably, but they weren't the ones who were retweeted tens of thousands of times by people who love to become irrationally angry at strangers without bothering to check if it's justified.
Luckily, those very same people were blessed with an incredible opportunity when Missy Elliot took the stage with Katy Perry at the halftime show at last night's Super Bowl.
I did a fair amount (read: 10 seconds) of research to make sure these people weren't trying to pull a fast one on the Internet, but from what I can tell, there are more than a few people who have legitimately never heard of the best rapper to ever wear a trash bag in a music video.
I'm pretty sure I'm the only human that didn't enjoy the halftime show #whoismissy — livia (@OliviaaDupuis) February 2, 2015

In fairness to the people above (especially the ones with "[Insert High School Here] Class of 19" in their bios), Missy hasn't been super active in the music scene for about a decade, so it's easy to understand why some members of the younger generation might have heard about her for the first time last night.
Based on the emoji she used, Missy seems to find the whole situation fairly entertaining.
