8 Women Prove Girls Should Totally Be Allowed To Rock A Tux To Prom
A high school in Pennsylvania is apparently unaware it's 2016, given it kicked a female student out of its prom for wearing a suit.
The girl, Aniya Wolf, who identifies as a lesbian, said she and her mother received a last-minute email saying girls would be required to wear formal dresses in order to attend the prom at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg.
But, at that point, they'd already bought a suit for Aniya, so she decided to wear it and attend anyway.
Consequently, she was forced to leave.
The school reportedly notified parents about the dress code three months ago, and in a statement released Saturday it said,
Bishop McDevitt will continue to practice acceptance and love for all of our students. They are tremendous young men and women. We simply ask that they follow the rules that we have put into place.
Regardless, this is utterly ridiculous and inherently intolerant. This school just denied a girl from going to her prom, one of high school's most quintessential events, because she didn't practice conformity.
If the school were truly accepting, it would've let the rules bend in this instance. In the process, it would've set a strong example for other schools at a time when the LGBTQ community is under constant attack.
It shouldn't matter if a girl goes in a tux or a boy goes to his prom wearing a dress. Simply put, this shouldn't be an issue anymore. Can we just let people be people, please?
