David Bowie, widely regarded as one of the most legendary musicians in history, died on Sunday at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer, NBC News reports.

Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, confirmed his death on Twitter with a sad but touching tweet.

Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all. pic.twitter.com/Kh2fq3tf9m — Duncan Jones (@ManMadeMoon) January 11, 2016

A statement was also posted on Bowie's Facebook page.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, Bowie never stopped making music.

Bowie's most recent album, Blackstar, was released on January 8, which happened to be his birthday and just two days before his death.

The endearingly eccentric and wildly talented artist created some of the most popular and influential music of the past several decades.

Bowie was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Rest in peace.
