Married Couple Discovers They’re Biological Twins In Story With Many Sad Twists

A doctor at a Mississippi fertility clinic was forced to reveal some extremely shocking news to a couple seeking treatment from him.

The two came to the clinic because they had been struggling to conceive a child and were interested in learning more about the in vitro fertilization process.

After performing routine DNA tests, the doctor discovered the couple were actually biological twins.

The physician, who can't be named in order to protect the identities of the married couple (who also remain anonymous as of now), told Mississippi Herald,

During the in vitro fertilization process, we take a DNA sample from both the male and female to get a profile of their genetic backgrounds. It's just a routine thing, and we wouldn't normally check to see if there was a relationship between the two samples, but in this case the lab assistant involved was shocked by the similarity of each profile.

At first, the doctor thought the married couple could just be closely related - first cousins, perhaps, which can happen sometimes.

He continued,

However, looking closer at the samples, I noticed there were way too many similarities. With this in mind, I was convinced that both patients were fraternal twins.

During their next appointment, the doctor broke the news as gently as he could to the couple, whose initial response was to burst into laughter.

The doctor explained,

The husband said that a lot of people remarked on the fact that they shared the same birthdays, and looked similar to each other, but he said it was just a funny coincidence and that the couple were definitely not related. The poor man had no idea.

Of course, their reaction only made it that much harder for the doctor to tell them the cold, hard truth.

Eventually, they began to take him seriously and pieced together how they began as biological twins and ended up as a married couple.

The doctor elaborated on the couple's mutual past,

The biological parents of the couple had died in a car crash when the couple were infants, and they had no close family willing to adopt them. They'd been taken into state care, and were adopted out to separate families. Due to a filing error, neither foster family had ever been told that their adopted child had a twin.

When the couple first met in college, they bonded over the similarities of their upbringings, oblivious, of course, to their shared DNA.

Now, with the weight of this news on their shoulders, the couple is reportedly considering the future of their relationship.

The doctor told Mississippi Herald,

I really hope they can work something out. For me, it's a particularly unusual case because my job is all about helping couples conceive a child. This is the first time in my career that I've been glad I haven't succeeded in that regard.
