Stephen Colbert Just Gave Nearly $800,000 To South Carolina Teachers

by John Haltiwanger

Stephen Colbert is as generous as he is hilarious.

On Thursday, Colbert announced he will fund all existing grant requests from teachers working in South Carolina public schools, The Greenville News reports.

The requests were made on the crowdfunding education website DonorsChoose.org, and Colbert is partnering with Share Fair Nation and ScanSource to fund every grant.

In total, around 1,000 projects are being funded for more than 800 teachers at 375 schools across South Carolina, Colbert's home state. That comes to nearly $800,000.

This philanthropic gesture provides everything from library books and trampolines to activity tables where students can receive individualized attention.

Teaching is one of the most difficult professions in the world, and people who commit their lives to it rarely get the thanks they deserve.

We could all learn a great deal from Colbert's example and provide educators across this country with the support they desperately need.

In short, Stephen Colbert is a legend! Well done, sir.
