Starbucks’ holiday 2022 season marks the 25th anniversary of the brand’s beloved red cups. To celebrate, the coffee giant is sharing the inspiration behind each year’s designs, and these are the most unique Starbucks red cups from the past 25 years.
It may not be red, but the purple jewel tones and whimsical illustrations featured on the first year of red cups had serious Friends vibes.
Dawning adorable snowflake, ice skate, leaf, and coffee pot drawings, the classic candy-apple red makes its debut with the 1999 cup.
The theme for the 2000 cup was “Coffeetown,” and it featured an adorable village made of coffee pots against a red and beige background.
Ice skaters show off their impressive moves on a snowy day around the outside of the 2007 red cup.
The 2008 cup featured a cozy knit design that made the reindeer, evergreen trees, snowflakes, and white dove look like your favorite ugly holiday sweater.
The 2010 red cups took a more modern approach, and marked the first appearance of Starbucks’ holiday characters as they catch falling snowflakes.
The holiday characters said their goodbyes in 2012 with a winking snowman and bold red and blue pops of color.
Starbucks’ 2016 holiday season was made complete with 13 customer-created red cups that all featured white hand drawn designs against a red background.
The 2017 design switched things up with a white background and bold, black lines that allowed customers to color the cup however they wanted.
The 2018 red cups paid homage to past designs with a holly covered white cup, red cable knit motif, bright red striped design, and green diamond pattern.
The 2020 red cups displayed a striped design that contained snowflake, evergreen tree, and candy cane accents to look like a festive roll of washi tape, as well as a green polka dot cup and more.
The ribbon pattern makes a return for 2022, except this time the vibrant lines are vertical and feature an eye-catching wave design. There’s also a sparkly green cup, a white cup with colorful accents, and a white and red cup with repeating tree designs.
