Simone Biles has captured the attention of US audiences after becoming the dominant force in gymnastics.
Well, OK, I guess that's not quite accurate, considering she won the world championship three straight years in a row leading up to this Olympics, and we didn't really care. Every time the Olympics come around, we realize gymnastics is an absolutely incredible sport and then promptly forget that revelation until the next Olympics.
Nevertheless, Simone Biles has finally become a household name.
She's a different order of magnitude in front of her competitors. She literally has a tumbling move named after her because no one else can do it.
“I'm not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps,” she told Sporting News after winning the gold in the women's all-round, “I'm the first Simone Biles.”
People can't get enough of her, and now in an ad released by Nike, we get to see footage of her displaying her shocking early gymnastics skills when she's just a child.
Her own mother narrates the video, speaking about Simone's dedication, her playfulness and her passion for the sport.
She says,
And when I see how dedicated she is, it humbles me. I always tell her, don't forget to be the best, Simone. Just be the best.
By the end, you'll feel simultaneously pumped up and like you might start crying.
