'Star Wars' Fans Are Convinced Rey & Kylo Ren Are Related & Here's Why

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is days away from release, and fans are at a fever pitch with theories. One thing we know: Rian Johnson has promised that we will find out who Rey's parents are, though he played down the repercussions of her lineage. But fans are still asking if there could be a Skywalker connection. Considering her link to Luke's lightsaber, and her almost immediate connection to both him and Kylo Ren, fans are suspicious she will turn out to be a Skywalker. So, are Rey and Luke related? Are Rey and Kylo Ren related?

The current answer is that we don't know. But, Lucasfilm has confirmed that the boy who was born Ben Skywalker-Solo and the girl known only as Rey share a "connection."

In the StarWars.com database, which is the official location for all things sanctioned as canon in this universe since being purchased by Disney, Rey's bio describes her meeting with Kylo Ren like this:

On Takodana, Skywalker’s lightsaber called to Rey, who experienced a Force vision. She rejected this call to destiny, but was captured by the dark side warrior Kylo Ren, with whom she shared a strange connection.

And in Ren's bio, we get similar wording:

Kylo swore his loyalties were only to Snoke. But he was intrigued when he captured Rey, a Jakku scavenger whose Force abilities were raw but very powerful. A mysterious connection seemed to link the two.

So what is this "connection"? Are they related? If so, how come they don't know each other at all? Kylo Ren was being trained by Luke. If he had a cousin, he would recognize her. And if he had a sister, he would remember that, too. This isn't a Luke-and-Leia scenario, separated-at-birth to protect them from a monster father situation.

Interestingly, the novelization of The Force Awakens may have a clue. There was a piece of dialogue between Rey and Ren that was cut from the final film. When the lightsaber flies to Rey's hand just before she and Kylo duel, he says: “It is you.”

Does he just mean it as "it is you," as in "you, my escaped prisoner with the force all strong insider her"? Or does he recognize her to be someone he's seen before, someone he last saw when they were very young, before they were whisked away and left on Jakku?

If so, she could very well be a relation. In fact, she could be his cousin... or his sister.

While some fans are hoping that Rey is not a Skywalker, since that answer is too easy, it's hard to miss her instant connection with all the Skywalkers. And not just Han Solo, who practically adopts her within days of meeting. She is also drawn to Luke's lightsaber, and upon touching it not only sees the collapse of the Jedi school he was running, but her own arrival on Jakku, suggesting these things are related. She has the above "connection" with Kylo Ren. Not only that, but when she lands at the Resistance base at the very end of the film and finally sees Leia for the first time, they embrace, and Leia seems as if she's known this child for years.

Now, that doesn't mean she is a Skywalker, mind you. She could be the daughter of some other Force-sensitive rebels, or, like Hermione Granger, the Jedi version of a mudblood, who has the ability appear within her spontaneously, even though her parents were just normal galaxy dentists.

But even so, if she was a Force-sensitive child, that would have meant she'd wind up in Luke Skywalker's school. If so, she could have been there while Kylo was a pupil, and whisked away to safety, the day the Knights of Ren came on Snoke's orders to destroy it. That would explain why he, Luke, Han, and Leia seem to recognize her.

If that turns out to be true, perhaps she is the one to become "The Last Jedi."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theaters everywhere on Friday, Dec. 15, 2017.
