7 Things To Know If You're Considering Lash Extensions

by Marissa Oliva

If you’re new to the eyelash-extension scene, I’m sure you've got questions. Yes, they let you roll out of bed looking glam. Yes, they eliminate the need for mascara. But there's a lot to know about the application, upkeep, and costs associated with lash extensions that you should familiarize yourself with before booking an appointment. That's why we've teamed up with Amazing Lash Studio to give you the lowdown. With more than 250 locations, they’re the largest eyelash extension brand in the country. So — IKYK — they're pros. And this year, in honor of National Lash Day on February 19, they’re giving you $10 toward your first set of lashes when you text the word "LASH" to 89000. Read on for more details, plus seven key things to know before your first visit.

What Are Lash Extensions, Exactly?

Unlike strip lashes that you can buy at a store and (painstakingly) glue on at home, eyelash extensions are applied by a professional to create the illusion of a naturally fuller lash line. "Lash extensions are individual strands of synthetic fibers made to replicate a natural eyelash," says Heather Elrod, CEO of Amazing Lash Studio. "Single strands are applied to each individual eyelash, one by one. With proper application, lash extensions look and feel completely natural, but with added fullness."

You’ll Want To Be Picky

You wouldn’t go to just any hairstylist for a major chop, right? Well, the same goes for your lash extensions. "Take the time to do your homework. Don’t automatically go for the lowest priced studio," says Elrod. "A good first step is to look at before and after photos on the studio’s website or social channels, read reviews, and ensure the studio looks clean upon arrival."

It’s also important to check out your stylist's credentials and see how much training they’ve been through. They’ll be working around your eyes, after all. "Depending on the state, your lash technician also needs to be licensed, not just certified," explains Elrod. "At Amazing Lash Studio, our lash stylists are licensed estheticians and cosmetologists. [They] must go through training to perfect their craft, as well as understand the importance of proper care and sterilization protocols."

It’s A Time Commitment - But It's So Worth It

If you haven’t had lash extensions before, or you're getting a new set applied, block off 90 minutes to two hours in your calendar. This is a good excuse to fire up your podcast queue or even listen to some guided meditations while you’re lash stylist gets to work. Consider it your "me time" whenever you get them touched up. We recommend going in every 2-3 weeks for your lashes to maintain that perfect look.

There Are A Few Dos and Don'ts To Remember Before You Go

Don’t curl your lashes before your appointment, and if you’ve had them permed, wait a few weeks until the treatment has worn off before getting extensions. Head to your appointment with a clean, bare face that's free of makeup. (If that's not possible, bring oil-free makeup remover along with you.) If you wear contact lenses, swap them for glasses the day of.

You’ll Get To Customize Your Lashes

Lash extensions can be as subtle or dramatic as you want them to be — discuss what effect you’re going for with your lash stylist so you're both on the same page. For instance, Amazing Lash Studio has four proprietary eyelash extension styles that you can customize according to the overall look, your eye shape, and your lifestyle.

The best part is, you can work with adding length or volume (or both!). If you just want a little more oomph, you might want to check out Amazing Lash Studio's most popular extension type: Amazing Volume. "Our Amazing Volume lash extensions consist of multiple strands of lightweight extensions bound together at the base and gently placed on a single natural lash for a fluffier, denser lash line," says Elrod, who adds that it is also offered in a range of lengths and comes in Amazing Volume Classic (3D) and Amazing Volume Glam (6D). "These are perfect for anyone who wants the look of mascara without having to apply it or [who] wants a more natural, wispy, everyday look."

Caring For Them Is Super Important

The key to a long-lasting set of fluttery lashes is all in the maintenance. For 24 hours after your service, you’ll want to avoid water, moisture, sweat, or steam. (So, def reschedule that hot yoga class.) "We recommend cleansing and washing lashes at least twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, and using only oil-free eye products," says Elrod. Amazing Lash Studio offers a line of products specially formulated for lash extensions, such as their Amazing Lash Studio Eye Makeup Cleansing and Protein Removal Pads and a Foaming Lash Wash. "A mild antibacterial foaming cleanser to cleanse the lashes is recommended, as well as oil-free mascara."

They’re Worth The Price (But They Also Don't Have To Be Super Expensive)

A full set of eyelash extensions will typically set you back at least $200-$300, but Amazing Lash Studio offers some amazing prices. "Our introductory pricing for a full set of eyelash extensions starts at $79.99, although it does slightly vary between regions," says Elrod. They also offer a monthly membership for lash maintenance at the same rate. "We made sure that eyelash extensions are a luxury accessible to all."

And because they’re the experts in lashes, Amazing Lash Studio is giving you $10 in Lash Cash to be used towards your first full set of eyelash extensions at their studio. Just text the word LASH to 89000 by Feb 19th (hurry!). Once you receive your Lash Cash, you have until March 15th to redeem.

Happy National Lash Day!
