Jake Gyllenhaal Wasn't Nominated For A Golden Globe & 'Stronger' Fans Are So Upset
The 2018 Golden Globe nominations were announced Monday, Dec. 11, and the Golden Globes has some explaining to do, particularly about the epic snubs in this year's list. Some of those snubs include the fact that there are no women nominated in the Best Director category (Patty Jenkins and Greta Gerwig deserved better), Jordan Peele wasn't nominated for Best Director for Get Out, and Wonder Woman got absolutely zero nominations. There's another snub on fans' minds, though, and that's Jake Gyllenhaal's. Jake Gyllenhaal's Golden Globes snub has Stronger fans up in arms for their leading man.
With a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Stronger was one of the year's favorite films. It tells the true story of Jeff Bauman (played by Gyllenhaal) — a man who lost his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing. Co-starring Tatiana Maslany, Gyllenhaal's performance was positively reviewed by critics and many thought he would be a shoo-in for awards season noms. The Golden Globes and the Oscars, however, are different caliber award shows and often have very different nominations, so it's possible Gyllenhaal will get his due when the Oscar nominations are announced.
Lots of fans think Gyllenhaal's performance in Stronger warrants a nomination.
Also snubbed for Golden Globes nominations are Patty Jenkins, Greta Gerwig, and Jordan Peele for their directorial work on Wonder Woman, Lady Bird, and Get Out, respectively, and The Big Sick.
Again, it's worth noting that the Golden Globe nominations often are not a good predictor for what the Oscars nominations will look like. But considering all of the drama the Oscars has caused with its nominations in the past (never forget the #OscarsSoWhite controversy), it's possible we're going to find some of this same disappointment. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, people!
