This Year's VMA Nominations Will Make BTS, Ariana, & Billie Fans VERY Happy
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the music industry has had to make some huge changes this year. Apart from artists canceling or postponing their tours, many also had to push back their albums and think of creative ways to film their music videos from home. Luckily, one thing remains the same: the 2020 MTV VMAs. The annual award show is still happening on Sunday, Aug. 30, and these 2020 MTV VMA nominations are making fans eager to see who will come out on top by the end of the night.
For the first time since 2013, the VMAs will return to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but fans can expect live performances all across New York City's five boroughs: Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.
Ever since fans found out the show was still going on this year, they've been sharing their thoughts on who should be nominated for each category. Ahead of the official VMAs nominations list on July 30, MTV only shared their picks for PUSH Best New Artist, so fans couldn't wait to see the full list.
When the big reveal came, fans were happy to see Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga leading the pack with nine nominations each. Many of those noms, including Video of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Collaboration, were for their joint single "Rain On Me."
Meanwhile, Billie Eilish and The Weeknd came right behind them with six nominations each, followed by Taylor Swift with five.
ARMYs will be happy to hear BTS received nominations for Best Pop, Best K-Pop, and Best Choreography for "ON" off their Map of the Soul: 7 album. In 2019, the group received four nominations for Best K-Pop, Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, and Best Choreography, and, although the feat was impressive, fans criticized the VMAs for creating an entirely new category for K-Pop, calling it an effort to increase voter engagement without giving BTS the recognition they deserved in the major categories. BTS' latest nom for Best Pop is a step in the right direction.
To reflect this year's unprecedented time, this year's nominations list also revealed two brand-new categories: "Best Music Video From Home" and "Best Quarantine Performance."
