This 'Last Jedi' Theory Has Us Convinced Rey & Kylo Ren Will Definitely Team Up

Is Star Wars: The Last Jedi about to turn mortal enemies into allies? That's what it is starting to look like, and now fans of the franchise are pretty sure that the new movie will actually see The Force Awakens heroine Rey and villain Kylo Ren working on the same side. So why are Rey and Kylo Ren probably teaming up in Star Wars Episode 8? And what could this across-the-lines alliance mean in the grand scheme of things? Let's get into everything we know.

The basis of this theory comes from the most recent Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer, which very heavily hints at Rey and Kylo Ren joining forces. At the end of the trailer, we see Rey saying that she needs someone to show her "her place in all of this," followed by Kylo Ren helpfully reaching out his hand. Hmmm, either this is a huge misdirect, or they are pretty clearly telling us that Kylo Rey is going to happen in The Last Jedi. The thing that is less clear is whether Kylo will try to bring Rey to the dark side, or if she will help the villain redeem himself and become a good guy. There's also the question of what sparked the surprising alliance, and what it could mean for the ongoing war.

Rey and Kylo Ren have been set up as foils of one another since they were both first introduced in 2015's The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi trailer further explores their similarities. Both are young Force users being trained by powerful leaders on the sides of good and evil. In the trailer, Supreme Leader Snoke marvels at his student Kylo Ren's "raw power," and later in the clip, we see Luke Skywalker also taken back by Rey's strength while training her. It's clear the two warriors are on very similar paths, just on the opposite sides of the war. Maybe this mirrored relationship could finally lead them to work with one another in the new movie.

Another potential twist that could spark a surprising team-up between former foes is the revelation that Kylo and Rey are siblings... or at least related. The big question that Star Wars fans are waiting for The Last Jedi to finally answer is the same one that Rey asks in the trailer: how does she fit into all of this? The Force Awakens introduced the new character as a mysteriously powerful young Force user, which left viewers wondering who her parents are. She was abandoned on the desert planet of Jakku as a child and never saw her parents, and that long, knowing look Luke Skywalker gave her at the very end of the first movie generated a ton of speculation.

The frontrunners for Rey's father right now seem to be the three heroes of the original Star Wars trilogy: Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Han Solo. Since Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, two of these potential fathers would make Rey related to Kylo: If her father is Luke, then she's Kylo's cousin, and if it's Han, then she's Kylo's sister. If Rey and Kylo Ren are able to figure this potential family relationship out, then it could definitely lead to the two of them sparking some sort of alliance. Let's just hope their team-up in the new movie doesn't lead to any romance only to later find out they are related... I think we already had enough incest in the original Star Wars movies with Luke and Leia.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi lands in theaters on Dec. 15.
