Shelby Ying Hyde is a Brooklyn-based contributor for Bustle, where she covers a mixture of celebrity style, fashion, and shopping news for the site. This coverage includes but is not limited to: seasonal trends and all-things red carpet.
With almost a decade of experience in the fashion industry, Shelby cut her teeth as a product writer and copy-editor for luxury E-commerce retailers, Net-a-Porter and Moda Operandi, respectively. In addition to writing detailed product descriptions, she worked as a liaison between the editorial and buying teams to ensure that the online verbiage aligned with that of brands like, The Row, Ganni, Markarian, and more — ensuring that customers could ultimately make an informed purchase.
This unconventional background provided Shelby with an extensive understanding of the market and the ability to spot emerging talent. Switching gears slightly, she went on to be the Shopping News Fashion Editor at BDG sister title, The Zoe Report, where she managed the celebrity style and fashion news verticals. She then became the Fashion Market Editor at Harper's Bazaar, before officially going freelance full-time.
Today, Shelby works as a freelance writer and branding consultant, acquiring bylines at a wide range of publications, including The Cut, Vogue, Condé Nast Traveler, ELLE, Wall Street Journal, and many more. She covers a wealth of topics such as fashion, travel, the vintage/secondhand market, as well as sustainability. Shelby also works closely with The United Nations by way of the Fashion Impact Fund to further push the conversation of conscious fashion forward.
Between her time at Miami University of Ohio, where she graduated with two degrees — one in Journalism the other in English with a professional writing track, as well as a minor in Fashion Design — and summer internships at companies like Tarin Thomas and Brother Vellies, it was clear that Shelby has been strategically planning her career trajectory from the start.
They say that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life and as someone that truly eats, sleeps, and breathes fashion, Shelby is constantly immersed in the trends and happenings within the industry. However, when she's not technically working, Shelby is gardening, hiking, or jet-setting the world, visiting countries like Ireland, Iceland, and Portugal, exploring the fashion and vintage markets to better understand the global consumer.
