The Met Gala is always a fever dream of fashion. So many celebrities, influencers, and fashion darlings all appear on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s steps in about a three-hour flurry of flashes. Each person is dressed to the nines in their themed garb, and every wild look deserves a moment of reflection. In case you missed any detail at the 2021 Met Gala, here are all the most impeccable looks that may have passed you by.
Amandla Stenberg wore tailcoat; a silk-satin, cupless corset; and dropped-waist shorts, all designed by Thom Browne. While this ‘fit has many details to bounce between — from a fur-trim on the jacket to a black tie to graphic lacing — what pops the most is the durag hairstylist Vernon Francois made out of Stenberg’s hair.
Like Dixie D’Amelio, Kendall Jenner also channeled a vintage, Audrey Hepburn look. This blinged-out, naked Givenchy dress is, according to a story posted by Jenner, a reference to Hepburn’s My Fair Lady ballroom dress.
In head-to-toe Chanel, Kristen Stewart also brought rockabilly energy with her pin-up bangs-and-ponytail combo. Her blouse is a pink brocade pattern with a flouncy collar and small pussy bow. To keep things clean and sharp, Stewart finished off her look with white wide-leg trousers.
One of the internet’s favorite boyfriends Pete Davidson stepped out of the box with his self-described “sl*tty nun” outfit, or a Thom Browne dress and white, suit jacket. But, the sweetest part is the Fred Leighton garnets he’s wearing as a tribute to his father and the others who lost their lives on 9/11.
“I call it this beautiful oil spill/edgy Victorian look," Mj Rodriguez told InStyle about her balloon-sleeved, corseted Thom Browne gown. "[It’s] still reminiscent of what forward American fashion looks like.”
It doesn’t get much more American than a literal quilt, and A$AP Rocky definitely won the most comfy points in this piece from Californian-brand ERL as he stood beside and equally fashionable and bundled-up Rihanna. Underneath it, however, is a funky black suit with a cropped jacket and untucked white shirt.
In her lamé Dundas gown and authentic Navajo jewelry, Quannah Chasinghorse was decidedly one of the best dressed of the entire night. The Indigenous model looked like liquid gold with the flowing skirt and train, but in true 2021 fashion, the bodice came with cutouts.
Normani was a real-life, Disney princess in her gorgeously gargantuan, chartreuse Valentino gown. The skirt was beyond voluminous, which was only matched by the gravity-defying, puffy sleeves. “Yellow pops on dark skin. I feel regal. I feel like a queen,” Normani said of her dress during a live Met Gala interview with Vogue.
If you’ve ever wondered what a Gossip Girl character would wear to the Met Gala, it would probably look something like Jordan Alexander’s vibrant Christopher John Rogers corset and wrap skirt. It’s as colorful as a Crayola marker box without being overwhelming to the eye.
Showing off their funky head tattoo with a completely shaved head, Indya Moore wore Saint Laurent to the 2021 Met Gala. The Pose actor’s looked included a crêpe jacket that went just beyond their heels for a slight train, had puffy sleeves, and met around Moore’s neck in a bow. They also wore a velvet top and white shorts.
Amidst all the gowns and black suits, Kid Cudi brought a mix of ‘90s, emo, and cyber punk with his graphic Met Gala look. The rapper wore JNCO-fit Louis Vuitton pants and a cerulean sweatshirt. His hair and sneakers were both neon green, and Kid Cudi wore heavy black eyeshadow around his eyes.
Grimes is ready for battle in her Dune-inspired Iris van Herpen gown and mask from the original movie. The print on the bodice looks like an alien’s skin, and it drips down to an ethereal black-and-gray flowing skirt. The whole piece took 900 hours to make.
