It’s no secret that Blake Lively loves the Met Gala. But the co-chair of fashion’s biggest night in 2022 recently revealed one secret that even her most eagle-eyed fans may have missed from her iconic Met Gala carpet moments.

In an interview with Vogue, Lively revealed her Met Gala style secret when speaking about her 2018 Met Gala ‘fit. “I’m matching the carpet,” she said, adding that “this has become a thing.”

The Gossip Girl alum also mentioned an Insta where she showed off her carpet and couture coordination skills, cheekily captioned, “...when the carpet matches the Blakes.”

“It’s just been a crazy thing, every year, where I match the carpet,” she said. Naturally, I had to do the photo research, and Lively was not making this up.

For her first matching moment — which was the first year the Met Gala started changing the carpet colors — Lively’s Burberry gown mirrored the blush pink with crimson detailing seen on the Met Gala carpet. You’re forgiven if you missed this one; it was subtle. The next year’s, though? Not so much.

In perhaps the most obvious moment of matching, the skirt of Lively’s Versace gown and the 2017 Met Gala red carpet shared a vibrant shade of cobalt blue. The hue was incredibly consistent, she could’ve laid down and been in total camouflage.

In 2018, the gorgeous embellishments and rich velvet fabric of Lively’s Versace gown echoed the not-quite-as-rich carpet. This year, the carpet featured a rich crimson, similar to Lively’s look, as well as some patterning that echoed her full skirt’s.

Since Lively served as co-chair of the event, she knew there would be “a lot of pressure” to match, so she committed. Blake kept the vibe going, albeit more subtly, at the 2022 Met Gala, echoing the blue and rust shades accenting the carpet in her Statue of Liberty and NYC architecture-inspired gown.

Honestly, this is so on brand for the cheeky actor, who is always so dedicated to big fashion moments. As for me, I’ll be adding “carpet matching the Blake,” to my 2023 Met Gala bingo card.
