DIY The Insane Glitter Lips From Missy Elliott's 'WTF' Music Video
Missy Elliott never takes a day off, especially when she's on a mission to win back our hearts.
Last week, Missy dropped "WTF (Where They From)," her first music video in seven years. As an added bonus, the video also features the excitable windup man that is Pharrell.
The dancing marionettes might have been a little creepy (hi, 'N SYNC!), but mostly we couldn't get over Missy's makeup.
From striped lipstick to lengthy false lashes, she spared no expense to prove she's among the music world's foremost divas.
Nothing beats the crystalline lip look she paired with a cut-glass disco ball of a sweatsuit, however.
Only Missy can make studded lips look natural, but we're willing to give it a try.
We called in Elcie Cosmetics founder Lilit Caradanian, best known as @MakeupByLilit, to help us put a little "WTF" in our beauty arsenal.
Start with silver.
After prepping the skin and lips with foundation to provide a neutral base, Caradanian outlined the lips with a metallic silver liquid liner. Here, she used Anastasia Beverly Hills Metallic Luster Liner in Liquid Silver.
Dramatic works best, so play up the cupid's bow and fullest parts of the mouth.
Play paint-by-number with metallic silver.
Next, Caradanian filled in the remainder of the lips using a cream-based silver pigment and a tiny brush. She loves Make Up For Ever's 12 Flash Color Case in Artistic, but any costume paint will do.
Use eyeliner for maximum sparkle.
Here's where things start to get tricky.
To make sure the alien-like silver sheen is perfect, add a coat of glitter with liquid eyeliner. Caradanian recommends Urban Decay's Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Glamrock.
Diamond time.
This step is the most important part.
Using a pack of crystals and easy-off lash adhesive, Caradanian applied each mini-diamond to the lips with a tweezer. She used the largest crystals in the center, then tapered to smaller sizes as she moved toward the mouth's corners.
For maximum sparkle, Caradanian glued on Swarovski gems. But, any craft store's brand will work just as well.
