Fashion Inspired By: Katharine Hepburn

I write about androgyny almost everyday. It’s my favorite style of dress; the ability to feminize masculine pieces is an art. Not only is androgyny a crisp and clean way to dress, it’s completely comfortable and a way to look business professional, without the discomfort.

Katharine Hepburn was truly one of the first females to perfect the androgynous style. The multiple Academy-Award wining actress was a self-proclaimed feminist raised by progressive parents in Connecticut. She embraced menswear because that’s the style of dress she felt most comfortable in.

Katharine Hepburn had the ability to wear a button down and a pair of wide legged trousers everyday even when more feminine styles of dress became more fashionable. She pioneered androgyny and I model many of my masculine outfits after her.

Dressing like Katharine Hepburn can be appropriate for any day. In a more casual setting, I would recommend wearing a cropped trouser with a pair of loafers or smoking slippers. A girly blouse (something with ruffles or bows, soft fabrics like chiffon and silk) would pair nicely with the pants. For a more formal setting, I would recommend a pair of long, wide legged trousers with a pair of oxford inspired heels, a blouse and a blazer.

Take a risk and stand out, I guarantee people will notice.
